Brook Trout Fishing Maine

Casting a fly to rising trout as loons call and the sun drops behind the treetops is a postcard image of fishing. And Maine has hundreds of remote streams and ponds with healthy populations of brook trout where this image can be realized.  I really enjoy getting off the beaten path to pursue native trout in wild settings, so a wide variety of trips into small streams and remote ponds are available.

We fish trout ponds from stable rowboats or large canoes with pontoon stabilizers.  The maximum number of anglers per trip is two. Fly fishing is the preferred method, but many quality ponds can also be fished with spinning gear. Most of the backcountry trout ponds that we fish are reached via well-marked trails that are less than a mile from the vehicle. A couple are just under a two-mile walk.

I also fish a number of different trout streams, mostly by wading.  On some trips, we’ll spend the day bushwhacking along a remote stream that might only see a couple anglers all season.  On others, we’ll drive on remote logging roads, and hopscotch our way among easier-to-reach pools on more accessible waters.  I also use a canoe to fish a couple of my favorite small streams and beaver flowages.

Brook trout trips cost $500 per day and are ideal with one angler. Some trips can accommodate two anglers. Developing custom itineraries and trip plans is one of my specialties. These start at $200 and are best done during the off-season.

“During three days of trout fishing, we never saw another person. Amazing. I didn’t think places like where you took me still existed”.

Ed R, New Hampshire

“I haven’t had dry fly fishing this good since I fished above the gates at Parmachenee in the 60’s.”

Ed G, Maine

“The mayfly hatch that we fished was so thick that I found dead flies in my fly boxes and pants pockets for several days after our trip.”

Neal B, Connecticut
